With March comes feelings of spring! Spring has always been one of my favorite seasons, as it
brings so much new life. I don’t think it is any coincidence that spring brings new life to the earth – it can be the same for us, too. While winter is a cooler season, one for rest and restoration, with spring comes more sun, warmth, and opportunity for growth. More sunny hours in the day allow for more work by light and time outside.
Sun is not only beneficial but also critical. For plants, it is the key element of photosynthesis, the
conversion of carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates, which are used in the growth of the plant. For us, the sun provides vitamin D. While vitamin D might seem insignificant, it is actually a crucial aspect of human life, too. In our culture today, many people do not get enough sun exposure to provide enough vitamin D in their bodies, so there is a need for supplementation.
Vitamin D has many benefits and roles in body processes. It plays a major role in bone strength,
growth, and restoration, as it influences calcium absorption. Vitamin D also aids in immunity,
cellular health, hormonal regulation, and mental wellness.
When the world was created, light was the first sign of the new creation. On day four of the
creation week, lights were placed in the sky – the sun and the moon. From the very beginning of
time, from the foundation of the earth, the sun has been a beautiful, crucial part of life. While we may not realize it, the sun and the seasons have a deeper impact on our well-being than may be expected. Sun exposure aids in supporting serotonin levels. Without enough sunlight
exposure, serotonin may drop, causing a drop in mood and focus.
With spring also comes warmer weather, which, for many, may bring more motivation to move
and be active! Physical activity is another key element to physical wellness, as activity can
strengthen your body systems and prevent diseases. Movement helps to regulate your body’s
cortisol rhythms and production of serotonin. Spring offers ample opportunity for warmth,
sunshine, and exercise, which will help you to feel your best and be set up for greater success.
As we begin this new season of spring, challenge yourself to embrace new habits and
opportunities presented to you by warmer days and more sunshine. A season that represents
new life and joy can offer you the same benefits, too!
